Overview of Smart Labels

Smart Labels allow you to save and re-use queries that are common to your environment, so you do not have to enter the query each time. Smart Labels also enable you to build complex queries that include nested queries, other Smart Labels, and other tags.

For example, you could create a Smart Label called EOL Windows Server that finds all assets running end-of-life versions of Windows Server.

  • You could define the Smart Label as type String, where “Yes” means that asset is running an EOL version of Windows Server.

  • You could then query which assets match the Smart Label and should be upgraded .

Unlike a saved query, Smart Labels can be combined and nested. So you can use EOL Windows Server as the first step of a multi-part query.

For example, you could create a Smart Label called EOL Windows Server US East that:

  • Finds all servers and VMs in the US East region

  • AND

  • Uses the EOL Windows Server Smart label to find all servers and VMs running EOL operating systems

You could use this query to find all assets in the East region that are running end-of-life versions of Windows Server. You could then tag these servers for maintenance and create a burndown chart for upgrades.
